Contemporary artist Fernando Velazquez rejects the boundaries between abstract and figurative art. His canvases are bold, ethereal, powerful. They sometimes allude to reality or are grounded in it - the movement of a bird, water, islands - but often he's driven purely by imagination and ideas…Show more around light, time, and the mysteries of the human condition.
Velazquez is Spanish, but had a studio in Hackney for a few years until he moved to Dorset, where he continues to create remarkable new work in almost total isolation. His work is held in collections in Spain, the UK, China and US. Despite a long career, he's now emerging as an artist worth watching. In 2013 he was the exhibition prize winner of the Dorchester Open and in 2014 he was a finalist for both the Evolver Prize and The Tribe Prize at Edgar Modern.
Like many notable abstract artists, Velazquez seeks to go beyond technique and intention. He has described painting as "an endless journey towards light".Show less
"Fernando paints with real passion. His works are bursting with energy and life. They are beautiful abstract pieces, but they're layered with meaning so they work on many different levels. I think these would look stunning in any interior."
