I am fascinated by the notion of vertical transport- the state of weightlessness, the awareness of one's existence, the idea of transcendence. These concepts are translated into paintings, the compositions derived from paper constructions of transport devices. The visual ambiguity of my work exists in the realm between representation and abstraction, whereas the doorway/ opening signifies the entrance to an altered reality.

I am fascinated by the notion of vertical transport- the state of weightlessness, the awareness of one's existence, the idea of transcendence. These concepts are translated into paintings, the compositions derived from paper constructions of transport devices. The visual ambiguity of my work exists in the realm between representation and abstraction, whereas the doorway/ opening signifies the entrance to an altered reality.
My research into mining in the Black Countries near my residence has led to a body of work that challenges the perception of the sublime. This coincided with the Chilean miners incident (August-October 2010), which subsequently led to the development of the Shaft series. I compare the rescue operation- particularly the upward journey to the ground level- with resurrection. The claustrophobic, warped space in the paintings contrasts with the subtle presence of light and open space.
