Gina Parr was born in Devon where rolling hills and dramatic seascapes played a
major part in her childhood. For the past 30 years she has lived and worked in
London and so consequently both places influence her work as an Artist.
Originally trained as a Fine Artist she graduated with a First Class Honours Degree and went on to Chelsea College of Art to study Set Design for Television.
Her credits for stage, studio and location for the BBC, Channel 4 and ITV span 27 years and have included set designs for Dame Shirley Bassey, Lesley Garrett, Vic and Bob, Kylie, Bob Monkhouse, Robbie Williams, David Bowie, Cher, Amy Winehouse and Julie Walters on shows as diverse as The Brit Awards, The Royal Variety
Performance, Shooting Stars, Goodness Gracious Me, the original design of Eastenders and The World Cup in 2006.
In 2003 she returned to painting and in 2010/11 whilst travelling in France, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, started photographing marks on walls and surfaces as her way of “painting” with her camera whilst on the move.
Both her painting and photography uncover our complex potential connections and disconnections with form and landscape, the fine line between pure abstraction and
figurative recognition, between chance and control, each piece suggests a unique atmospheric world with it’s own pictorial resonance or echoes which in turn provoke our capacity to imagine a space beyond our known territories. Her work has been described as muscular, strong, vibrant and bold and is in private collections in the United States, Norway, Germany and Eire and here in the UK both in London and in the South West. She has exhibited in shows in London, Milan, Brighton and Exeter.
She has also lectured and mentored in both Art and Design and Design for
Television at Chelsea College of Art, the BBC and Nottingham University.
