In the mid eighties, Omar Zingaro Bhatia was born into a mixed parentage family in the Northern territories of Scotland. Their home at the time was just a mile or so across the marshes from the Highland Wildlife Park and as a child in wintertime, Omar could hear the wolves howling. His father Zul, was born in the East African coastal city of Daresalaam and his mother was born in Vancouver of Hebridean heritage. One hundred and fifty years ago her Skye-dwelling ancestors left aboard a ship for new North American horizons. As Macintosh descendants, they had suffered terrible slaughter on the battlefields of Culloden and for them Scotland represented only oppression and poverty. Like so many others, they left. His father’s family came from Jamnagar, India but moved onwards through Africa, through Europe and finally after almost a hundred years of being on the move many settled in British Columbia. It was sometime around 1845 that the Vagabond spirit was kindled in both lineages and Omar attempts to stay true to this old-world tradition of aspiration. His approach to life and the living of it is ferocious. Internationality plays a pivotal role in his artwork and his portraits reflect this. All belong to the same family, the Fatalistic Family. The artist is known to regard his paintings as orphans and art galleries as orphanages where the artworks can be adopted for a price
