The painting illustrates (as a plot device), the beginning of a great journey: a quest. I placed the dog with his boundless enthusiasm on the sunlit lane. He brims with potential and seeks adventure (like the protagonist of the classic quest story). Richard Whytyngdone was the real-life inspiration for the pantomime character Dick Whittington - leaving home to seek his great fortune. The story goes that humble beginnings begat tireless philanthropy once his ‘fortune’ was found. I was pursuing the idea of Liminality: The phase of a rite of passage, during which the participant lacks social status or rank (the mongrel), before blossoming as an empathetic and knowledgeable soul after the rites of passage experience. By taking the journey, experience is had, knowledge gained, fortune found.
