Transience is at the heart of Jane Boyer’s work, as she sees identity residing in the gap between existence and change. This ‘equation’ has several elements, with Jane combining them in new and unexpected ways, like liquefying pastel with fixative to create a ‘slick’ of color. Here the elements interact as in a mathematical function, with their combination ‘described’ in the act of painting, with the work itself a visual result of this calculation.

Jane Boyer is an abstract painter who uses very little paint in her paintings, preferring the contrast of powder and liquid in the creation of surfaces; powdered graphite being one of her favourite media, with her most recent paintings use black acrylic paint more as ink than paint.
